| Notes: | From Warren - The wing can be .
any sort of mottled feather that meets the color you want to
match. My example is a large grouse feather, but hen hackle,
pheasant, partidge, etc. all work equally well.
Select your feather, and strip off the excess fluff. Then
carefully apply to the feather a piece of tape, trying not to
mess up any of the fibers. Once this is done, coat the feather
with head cement or Fleximent. Let dry.
Next, use a scissor, trim the taped feather to a rectangular
shape, removing excess feather & tape. Then fold along the
stem of the feather. Now make a long diagonal cut, and then a
rounded cut, so you create something of a "heart" shape. See
my photo below. I was able to make two wings from the one feather.

Now we can tie the fly. Tie on your thread, and tie in a hackle
to palmer up the body. Next dub the body and wrap up the hook shank.
Next, palmer the hackle up the body for 3 or 4 turns, and tie off.
Then, trim the fibers off of the top half of the fly, leaving only
those below the level of the hook shank.
Now, position the wing over the body, and make several wraps to hold
it in place. Trim any excess from the "point" of the wing.
Last, tie in the hackle again and make a few turns over the point
where you tied on the wing. Tie off the hackle and tie a neat head.
Apply a drop of head cement.
Some people like to put on antennae. I admit they look nice, but I
find then a nuisance when I tie the fly on the tippet. Your choice.
Here is a top view of my fly, so you can get an idea of how the wings look.
